WINCHESTER GREEN LABEL BOX OF 25 .32-40 CALIBER,
FACTORY PRIMED CARTRIDGE CASES – ca. 1880s:
A scarce and very
collectable box of 25, factory primed cartridge cases
for the caliber.32-40 bearing the desirable early
Winchester Repeating Arms Company green label.
Originally introduced in 1870 as a chambering for single
shot rifles, Winchester and Marlin adopted the .32-40
caliber for their lever action and single shot rifles.
As with many of the other popular cartridges, in
addition to offering packets of the fully loaded
cartridges, Winchester also packaged components such as
these cartridge cases for sale to the shooters who did
their own reloading, such as was practiced on the far
reaches of the West. Certainly, these boxes of
cartridge cases would have been in the inventory of the
dealers, gunsmiths, and general stores supplying the
Western Frontier.
This box is in very good condition, retaining its full
form with all of the corners and edges intact, except
for one of the vertical edges of the top of the box. As
can be seen in the photos below, this one edge has
opened, but it is a clean separation and could be
repaired easily if you so desire. The box features a
full, legible cover label with very minimal shelf wear
as can be seen in the photographs below. The box
retains all twenty-five of the original .32-40
Winchester cartridge cases.
This is a very nice specimen of a
scarce box of Winchester primed cartridge cases
manufactured for the rifles on the Western Frontier, and
one that does not appear on the collector market very
often. This box will make a nice addition to a
Winchester Rifle and/or cartridge collection.
